Training Log: April 30 – May 6

I have a “training plan” again. It’s this cute little Word document full of tables and formatting and numbers. The goal of this little technical writing exercise is to help me preserve fitness throughout the summer months, with a 15k or possibly a half marathon to come with cooler temperatures in the fall.

It’s my same basic training schedule — 5 days of running per week, 1 day that I allot to yoga (but actually do nothing), and 1 day of complete rest. I’ve learned that trying for anything more only leads to injuries and burnout. In a spirit of optimism, I’ve also included a “speed work day,” but much like my fictional cross training day, this tends to get ignored more often than not. Ah, well. Such are the luxuries of being an old lady, middle-of-the-pack runner.

So…traditional goals, traditional plan, and a traditional complete divergence from said plan in the VERY FIRST WEEK OF TRAINING. Oh, Megan. So predictable.

Training
April 30 – May 6

Monday – 0 …This was an intentional rest day. This was also the day where I helped my friend D with her “30 things to do before she turns 30″ list by going with her to a new restaurant. I only say that to explain the next couple of days…

Tuesday – 0 …LilRunr woke up screaming at 11:00pm on Monday. After settling him down and getting him back to “night night,” I realized that my stomach, which had felt slightly over-full and uneasy when I’d gone to bed, was preparing to stage a revolt 2 hours later. Oh. My. Goodness. Gracious. Perhaps this little food borne illness is owing to the fact that I ordered chicken at a sushi restaurant, but as I told D…I REGRET NOTHING. An evening out? Uninterrupted conversation? Catching up with a friend? Yes, please! Next time, I’ll just try to skip spending the rest of the night alternately crouched in front of the toilet or whining on Twitter.

Wednesday – 0 …Half of me wanted to run, and the other half figured that dropping 3 pounds in a day warranted at least two days of recovery. There’s a very complicated formula involved when it comes to being lazy.

Thursday – 0 …Now I’m just stuck in lazy mode. Poop.

Friday – 2 miles (8:45/mile) …Scott and I took the day off (we call them “day dates.” We’ll go out to lunch, shopping, perhaps a movie…all part of maintaining sanity and having some “together time” without having to pay for a babysitter. It may seem like a silly way to spend a vacation day, but it works for us. They are extremely rare, are these “day dates.”) and started our day with a two-mile run together. It felt terrible, but the streak of 0′s is finally broken.

Saturday – 2 miles (8:38/mile) …I’ve got about half a lung at this point, courtesy of a terrible hacking cough that is PROBABLY caused by allergies (but I keep imagining consumption, because I’ve been reading too much 19th century literature lately) and the ultra high humidity. It was NOT a fun run, but I did it, dang it. I did it.

Sunday – 4 miles (8:37/mile) …Don’t listen to Runmeter. I forgot to hit “stop” for a couple of minutes after I was actually done running, and that cranked the average up to 9:15 or so. It lies! Running over 2 miles felt like a breakthrough day. I think next week will be better.

TOTAL: 8 miles

Training Log: Week 6

Hey, guess what! Race #2 of my 12×12 plan happens THIS SATURDAY! I know, I almost forgot, too. I suddenly realized that my goal of racing every month means that (duh) a race will happen at least once every thirty days…which means that there’s not really any room for a random three-week break.

Week 6
January 30-February 5

Monday – 0

Tuesday – 2.27 miles (8:16/mile) …This is the day when it was almost 60 degrees outside and Scott came home from work to learn that I hadn’t found time to run. “Go,” he said. “Go run NOW.” A 60-degree, sunny, windless January day? Yup, gotta run.

Wednesday – 3.12 miles (7:49/mile) …oooooh, boy! We’re really zooming now! I felt GREAT today. Really, really, really great.

Thursday – 0

Friday – 0

Saturday – 5 miles (8:48/mile) …The legs were pretty dead today. Some random hamstring soreness, too. Oh, and I seem to have caught LilRunr’s cold. AND it was 40 degrees and raining. Suffice to say, this was the least enjoyable run of the week, but I was pleased to know that I can still run more than 3 miles.

Sunday – 3.23 miles (8:18/mile) …This is the day where I saw a college teammate running on the other side of the street with his dog, and yet when I waved at him and then called “ERIC!”, I received no response. Clearly, he has some kind of stunt double or clone that he employs to run with his hyperactive dog. That is the only explanation. Right, Eric? ;)

TOTAL: 13.62 miles

Training Log: Week 5

There’s not much to say this week…I didn’t do much in the way of running.

Week 5
January 23-29

Monday – 0

Tuesday – 0

Wednesday – 0

Thursday – 0 …catching on to a trend here?

Friday – 0 …catching on to a trend here?

Saturday – 3.8 miles (8:26/mile) …Running! Yes!

Sunday – 0.35 miles …I don’t want to talk about this. My legs were some kind of sludge, so I gave up on running and went for a nice walk through the neighborhood. I WANT MY COLD WEATHER BACK! And then, since I was a total wimp, I took my baby boy and his too-adorable-to-be-believed swim trunks and went to the gym with Scott. It was fun. And funny. LilRunr didn’t know what to make of such a big bathtub.

Baby's first pool workout.

TOTAL: 4.15 miles + fun with my family

Training Log: Week 4

Week 4
January 16-22

Monday – 3 miles (8:12/mile)

Tuesday – 2 miles (8:34/mile) …treadmill

Wednesday – 0

Thursday – 0

Friday – 2 miles (8:30/mile) …I ran at 11am today purposely in an attempt to determine how I should dress on race day.  Conclusion: warmly. I should dress warmly.

Saturday – 13.25 miles (8:34/mile) …HALF MARATHON DAY! 1:52:37 for a PR. I don’t remember much else about training for the week. Silly.

Sunday – 0

TOTAL: 20 miles

Training Log: Week 3

WEEK 3
January 9-15

Monday – 0

Tuesday – 2 miles (8:40/mile) …this was on the treadmill at the gym. I was in a state about leaving LilRunr to go to Charleston, and I really had to make myself get out there and run AT ALL. I know, silly.

Wednesday - 0 …if I was “in a state” the day before travel, the day OF travel was characterized by tears, much fretting, and a random eye twitch. It would have been good for me to go run off some of that nervous energy, but I wasted the morning and then spent the rest of the day traveling to Charleston. Ah, well.

Thursday – 5 miles (8:37/mile) …a delightfully, differently scenic run along the Charleston battery and historic neighborhoods. I was surprised by how many fellow runners I saw out hitting the streets…until I learned that Charleston’s 2nd marathon was happening that Saturday. Mystery explained.

Friday – 3 miles (8:23/mile) …a late night with co-workers meant that the planned 5:30am run did not happen. Fortunately, our meetings ended an hour earlier than scheduled, giving me time for a quick afternoon run before meeting the rest of the group for dinner. Hooray!

Saturday – 0 …another travel day. I woke up at 5:30am to meet my flight, and trying to keep up with the rest of my co-workers meant that I actually get more sleep at home with LilRunr, he of the unpredictable sleep schedule. Oy.

Sunday – 4 miles (8:24/mile) …back in Kansas, and the 25mph winds prove it! It was chilly today, but it felt good to run off some of the effects of traveling.

TOTAL – 14 miles (I’ll call it “tapering”, not “laziness.” Lol!)

Training Log: Week 1

WEEK 1
December 26 – January 1

Monday – REST

Tuesday – 2 miles (8:57/mile)

Wednesday - 4 miles (8:05/mile) …WHOA! 8:05? That’s seriously right on the border of an acceptable college “slow” pace. Coach wouldn’t call it jogging! Heck yeah!

Thursday – 4 miles (8:44/mile) …This is the day that I dropped the car off for an oil change and then ran home. It was fun, but the day was windier and the course hillier than I figured on. Also, I might have been a tad tired from the surprisingly fast 4-miler from Wednesday.

Friday – 3 miles (8:03/mile) …so, is the 8:00/average thing going to be a trend? I’m speechless.

Saturday – 6 miles (8:21/mile)

Sunday – REST

TOTAL – 19 miles
